About Rainbow

Rainbow Tomes

Therapist Researcher Trainer Speaker

Rainbow is the founder of A Girl Called Rainbow, which helps organisations prevent harm and improve performance through mental health training, leadership coaching and counselling. In 2010, her life changed when her eldest son's father died by suicide. Realising how little she knew about mental health, and how hard the right support was to find, she made it her mission to help others get the support her family didn't have. Since then, her work has supported thousands of people through the most difficult of times.

A qualified counsellor and coach registered with the NCPS, Rainbow specialises in grief and trauma. For over eight years, she has trained organisations in mental health first aid and suicide prevention. Alongside her professional training and research, she brings lived experience of being autistic with ADHD and CPTSD.

Rainbow's research looks at what happens to people's mental health and performance when systems fail to recognise their experiences and needs. It also asks how organisations can prevent that harm. She explored this in her degree research with 20 qualified counsellors, graduating with First Class Honours. Through a PhD in Business and Law with Bournemouth University, she is now taking this to doctoral level, building evidence organisations can use to prevent harm and improve performance.

Drawing on her work with individuals and organisations, from the NHS to national employers, Rainbow has developed three core approaches, grounded in ongoing research: Human-Informed Practice®, Human-Informed Leadership® and True Colours Therapy®. She shares this work at conferences and on her Talking Grief podcast, where leaders, HR professionals and people with lived experience talk openly about grief at work.

For individuals

True Colours Therapy®

Every part of you is welcome here.

When something has hurt you, whether that's grief, trauma or a system that should have cared for you, it can leave you feeling stuck, unheard or not quite yourself.

True Colours Therapy® is Rainbow's own integrative approach to one-to-one work. Drawing on Internal Family Systems, Gestalt and coaching, it helps you make sense of the different parts of yourself and what's happened to you, so you can trust your own insight and choose how you want to move forward.

Rainbow brings expertise in institutional harm, specialist training in working with neurodivergence, and her own lived experience of being autistic with ADHD, knowing that everyone's experience is different.

"I have tried different ways of coping for quite some time and never benefited from reaching out for help until now. Rainbow offers a safe space to be yourself. She partners with you, so you feel supported, and she actually listens."Sophie, client
